Gordon Ramsay dragged for ‘pale’ & ‘bland’ butter chicken dish, but earns Indian chef’s seal of approval

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is taking the heat after sharing a video of his butter chicken recipe.

The video, posted on Feb. 17, 2023, shows the dish being made using onions, green chilies, spices and chicken, then plated with rice and garnished with coriander.

His post was a collaboration with the Gordon Ramsay Academy, a cooking school run by the chef.

“Sorry excuse of a butter chicken”

With more than 2.5 million views since it was shared, the video unfortunately did not sit well with people of the internet.

Their main complaint, it seems, is that the butter chicken—a dish which hails from India—did not appear to be authentic.

One commenter helpfully provided some instructions:


A few commenters also cheekily referenced Uncle Roger, a character played by U.K. based Malaysian comedian, Nigel Ng.

Haiyaa” is a catchphrase that Ng regularly employs in his videos, often to express outrage.

Nigel shot to fame after a critique of his BBC Food video on cooking egg fried rice went viral.

He’s gone on to review several other food videos, and has made several TV appearances on shows like MasterChef Singapore, Junior MasterChef Indonesia and Hell’s Kitchen.

Interestingly, he’s also reviewed quite a few Gordon Ramsay dishes, with the celebrity chef jokingly shading him in a video where he cooks Indonesian fried noodles.

Not all bad

Not all the feedback on Gordon’s interpretation of butter chicken was bad though.

One commenter defended it, adding that Indians also modify other international dishes.

Another who claims to have tried the dish before in one of Gordon’s restaurants claims that it could “give many fine Indian restaurants[s] a run for [their] money”.

Meanwhile, Indian chef and food writer Maunika Gowardhan (@cookinacurry) appeared to affirm its authenticity, rebutting commenters who thought otherwise.
